Overview

Black Barroth

Known as the Eruption Wyvern, the Obsidian Barroth is a fearsome, black-colored subspecies of the Barroth that can only be found in volcanic areas.

The Obsidian Barroth is a rare subspecies of Barroth found in volcanic environments. Just like its desert and tundra-dwelling cousins, the Obsidian Barroth coats itself in an armor; however, it doesn't use either mud or snow. Instead, it bathes in lava, which eventually cools into a rock-hard armor.

The Obsidian Barroth, just like the other members of its family, primarily feeds on insects. As such, a majority of its time is dedicated to finding food, which more often than not involves going to and from its home volcano. However, its roaming behavior often puts it at ends with other monsters, many of them more powerful than it.

Attacks

180° Charge Ailment Inflicted: None
Normal Mode

The Obsidian Barroth lowers its head and charges, not unlike the normal Barroth. However, the Obsidian Barroth is capable of doing a 180° turn mid-charge. This move can be chained several times, and can be used in-tandem with the Tail Spin move.

Rage Mode
Increased speed.
Evasive Maneuver

Dodge frequently, as this attack is considerably fast, especially in Rage Mode. Take the visual cue of the Barroth raising its head mid-charge, which signals it's about to turn.

Lava Bath Ailment Inflicted: None
Normal Mode

The Obsidian Barroth heads toward the nearest source of lava and rolls in it, covering itself in lava. This lava will eventually cool into a new suit of armor. During this cooling phase, it's capable of preforming the Lava Shake move.

Rage Mode
The Obsidian Barroth charges toward the lava instead of walking. The damage and force is equal to its 180° Charge move.
Evasive Maneuver

As this isn't an actual attack, there isn't much you can do. However, you should roll out of the way if it's heading toward you, especially in Rage Mode.

Lava Shake Ailment Inflicted: Fireblight
Normal Mode

The Obsidian Barroth shakes its body, flinging chunks of hot lava across the general area. Any Hunters hit by these chunks will receive massive fire damage and will contract Fireblight. This move can only be done if the Barroth's recently preformed the Lava Bath move.

Rage Mode
Increased speed.
Evasive Maneuver

Move away from the lava's impact area. You can stay underneath the Barroth and continue to attack it, but the lava's splash radius can still hit you and inflict Fireblight.

Roar Ailment Inflicted: Fireblight (Enraged)
Normal Mode

The Obsidian Barroth stamps its feet, stands more upright than usual, then emits a loud roar, causing all nearby Hunters to cover their ears if they're not using High-Grade Earplugs.

Rage Mode
Lava geysers will burst from the ground near the Obsidian Barroth, dealing fire damage and inflicting Fireblight.
Evasive Maneuver

Put distance between yourself and the Barroth, or come equipped with High-Grade Earplugs. In Rage Mode, a lava geyser's location will be indicated by a glowing patch of ground.

Stomp Ailment Inflicted: None
Normal Mode

The Obsidian Barroth raises one of its leg high into the air, then violently brings it down on whatever is under him. This attack deals a considerable amount of damage and also causes a quake. The damage inflicted is dependent on how close the Hunter is. Hunters who are near, but not too close, will only tremble as a result of the quake. This move can be chained several times.

Rage Mode
No difference.
Evasive Maneuver

Guard against the attack if necessary or dodge out of the way. The leg stomp itself can be avoided, but the quake is still likely to shake you. The quake itself can be rolled out of however, with no ill effect.

Tail Spin Ailment Inflicted: None
Normal Mode

The Obsidian Barroth spins around, swinging its mace-like tail. Hunters hit by this move receive physical damage and are knocked into the air. This move can be chained several times, and can be used in-tandem with the 180° Charge move.

Rage Mode
The Obsidian Barroth does a full 360°.
Evasive Maneuver

Either move out of the way or take advantage of how the Obsidian Barroth's tail curves. In Rage Mode however, it'd be best just to move out of the way entirely.

Triple Head Smash Ailment Inflicted: Fireblight (Enraged)
Normal Mode

The Obsidian Barroth slams its head against the ground three times, causing lava to erupt from the ground. Those hit with the lava receive fire damage and are inflicted with Fireblight.

Rage Mode
Larger area of effect.
Evasive Maneuver

Move away from the Barroth's general head region, especially in Rage Mode. The lava's area of effect is significantly large; large enough to hit people near its sides.
