Korugons are hard shelled Carapaceons, first introduced in Monster Hunter Z. They are the juvenile form of the much larger Sheer Korugon.

Korugons have a very, very tough and heat resistant purple exoskeleton and an Ammonite fossil as their shell. This shell is rusty brown in colour, due to extreme heat exposure. The only thing that keeps the shell from melting is the sticky slime coating that the Korugon produces from its mouth parts. They can spit this slime out onto the ground to inflict the new Viscous status ailment on hunters and monsters, slowing their advance. They also have blade - like, pincers with serrated edges. Their whole exoskeleton also has a white, spotted pattern all over it.

Korugons are ambush predators - they lie in wait underground and underneath a puddle of slime that they have produced. If something walks into the slime, the Korugon will sense it, via the vibrations the intruder produces, which it picks up using its legs. They burst up from the ground and attack the intruder with their claws. The only drawback to this is that they have no clue about what triggered their slime trap. Most of the time it is a larger monster and the Korugon ends up being eaten by it. Sheer Korugons prevent being attacked by their fellow Korugons when they step into their slime trap by producing a peculiar sound - this sound signals the Korugons underground that their leader is in the area with them. Before leaving the area, the Sheer Korugon issues a different sound, to signal the Korugons that it is safe to go back into ambush mode again.

Korugons are most common in volcanoes. However, they also live in the high temperatures of the underground areas of the Deep Ravine, and the very hot areas of the Scorched Prairies.
